Ofsted Report 2014

Letter to parents June 2014

Dear parents and carers,

“…a harmonious and happy school…” that “pupils love coming to” and where "teaching is often inspirational" Ofsted 2014

It gives me great pleasure to share our recent Ofsted report with you.

I am extremely pleased that the inspection team recognised the school’s many strengths, judging Edwards Hall to be a Good school with Outstanding elements.

I was particularly thrilled that the children’s behaviour was judged to be Outstanding.  In the context of an Ofsted inspection this means that, not only are your children extremely polite, courteous and considerate, they also demonstrate outstanding ‘learning behaviours.’ By this I mean their eagerness to learn, their ability to work together and to try their best.  This is reflected in the statement "The behaviour of pupils is outstanding. They say that teachers make learning fun and they show an excitement in learning new skills."

Teachers and support staff have worked extremely hard developing an exciting curriculum, a great environment for learning, excellent use of marking and much more.  I can honestly say that this is the strongest, most dedicated staff I have ever had the pleasure of working with.  It was great that this was acknowledge and that the inspectors could see that this is not only a happy place for the children but for staff as well, stating that "...staff morale is high. As one said, ‘the training and support which staff are given is exceptional’." And “…this is a happy and friendly place.  As one pupil put it, ‘we are happy because everyone here smiles.’”

When looking at the areas for improvement please appreciate that this is what we need to do to make sure that the school is Outstanding.  Maths was seen to be Outstanding while reading and writing are very good.  I feel that the mentioning of Year 3 and 4 specifically is a little harsh as writing across the curriculum (i.e. longer pieces of writing in history etc.) is something that we need to develop further across the whole school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your on-going support and belief in the school. Thank you for completing the parent questionnaire and for all those parents who spoke so highly of the school either by talking to the inspectors in person, by letter or email.

I am extremely proud to be part of the team that has made Edwards Hall the school it is today.  I am just as proud of the children and staff who have made it possible.  As the report says this is a school that “goes from strength to strength.”  We look forward to even greater success in the future.

Yours faithfully,

Jim Johnson,   Head teacher
